FP7 New Unique Registration Facility launched

28 Apr 2008

A new service called Unique Registration Facility (URF) has been launched on CORDIS to facilitate the preparation of grant agreements between participants and the European Commission.
Thanks to the new service, participants in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) and other programmes managed by the Research Directorate General will no longer have to submit their legal and financial information each time a new grant agreement is in the pipeline.
Once participants have been validated by the European Commission's central validation team for their existence as legal entities and their legal status, they will only have to submit their Participant Identification Code (PIC).
The new service will also make it possible for participants to see the legal and financial data the Commission holds on them. As a result, they will be able to suggest changes and updates.

Furthermore, the unique identification of each participant will help the production of statistical reports. It will also be possible to track organisations from proposal to negotiation stage.

The URF is only the first module of a participant portal currently under development. In the future, this portal is intended to become the central means of communication between participants and the Commission.

Brochure: ICTs Studies on eHealth issues

Source: INFSO - ICTs  (CORDIS)
05 Mar 2008

EU policy-makers and programme managers rely on accurate, timely information. In a fast-moving field such as eHealth, the Commission regularly orders studies on issues of significance to inform the development or review of policy.  Extensive co-operation among stakeholders in health services and the medical professions, who often have little previous experience of international co-operation, is vital if the EU is to build a European eHealth Area. Many of the problems and challenges which the health sector faces are repeated throughout Europe . Healthcare providers who co-operate to solve such problems are likely to find solutions more quickly.

The Commission's role is to encourage and facilitate that co-operation. It uses the results of studies to help identify the common problems that Member States face, and to point the way to solutions. A genuine European eHealth Area will only come about if its architecture is developed and understood by all European stakeholders. Each year the Commission launches studies to ensure all actors can better understand the challenges facing the eHealth sector throughout the EU.

As part of the work to implement the eHealth action plan , the EU has commissioned a set of studies on issues including: the exchange of good practices in eHealth, how to address common challenges; patient identity in eHealth; legal and regulatory aspects of eHealth; and the impact of ICT on patient safety and risk management in healthcare. These studies are particularly focused on identifying specific areas of eHealth work that will concentrate EU research funding under the Seventh Framework Programme .

PIDS: A new repository for FP6 project outputs
(FP6 Project Coordinators and Commission's Project Officers)

Source: CORDIS
14 Feb 2008

A new one-stop-shop with information on projects funded the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) is now available on CORDIS, the European Community's Research and Development Information Service.

FP6 project coordinators will be able to use the Project Information and Dissemination Service (PIDS) as a collection point for all of their project's outputs: results, news, documents, and events.
The advantage for the Commission's project officers is that they have access to information on each of their projects, all of which is stored in one place.

Any FP6 project can be added to PIDS. The only prerequisite is that the project details must have been entered in the Commission's project database by Commission officials and sent to CORDIS for inclusion in the CORDIS project database.
Once uploaded to PIDS, non-contractual information can be added or updated by the project officer.

The documents or data marked 'public level of dissemination' and approved by the project officer will be disseminated to the relevant CORDIS platforms: results will be displayed in the CORDIS results database; news and events will appear in CORDIS Wire; documents will be published in the CORDIS Library.

Contact: To access PIDS, please visit: http://cordis.europa.eu/pids/

FP7 Health Research Web Service unveiled by CORDIS

05 Feb 2008

CORDIS, the Community Research and Development Service, has launched a new health research web service for the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). It will provide a highly informative portal on this major theme, which comes under the umbrella of the FP7 Cooperation programme. (http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/health/home_en.html).

The health of Europe's citizens is the priority for health research, followed by improving the performance of health-related businesses and tackling global health issues. The budget of €6.1 billion reflects the EU's level of commitment to the health research programme.

An 'About Health' page gives comprehensive details of the three pillars of the health research focus. Emphasis on biotechnology and ensuring that research is specifically geared towards the improvement of human health are the first two themes. Maximising the delivery of the fruits of research to the relevant recipients, including healthcare officials, practitioners and patients is the third.

Following the 'Get Support' link is a list of National Contact Points (NCPs), which forms the main basis for obtaining further information. Users will also fine support for research applicants, proposal negotiation, project management and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Funding schemes are outlined, as well as training, from business skills at Bioentrepeneur Boot Camps to courses for scientists in project and innovation management.

A page dedicated to 'International cooperation', an integral part of Health research, explains the strategies involved in the realisation of this prominent theme throughout FP7. Any country can participate, and programme-level cooperation with industrialised countries is encouraged.
Reflecting the increasing prominence of SMEs, FP7 has increased the provision of means of participation. In particular, funding is more generous and constitutes 15% of the overall budget of the Health programme. Intellectual property, always an important factor for commercial enterprises, has been given more protection.

For essential information, a 'Library' page lists all relevant documents on Health Research under FP7 and, for further facts and figures, the 'Useful Links' page outlines all areas relating to Health within FP7. These include current health research in FP7 as well as details of 'Life sciences, genomics and biotechnology for health', the FP7 theme's forerunner from FP6. Also listed are EU institutions and services, research policies and initiatives.

The service can be accessed at: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/health/home_en.html

CORDIS launches Slovenian Presidency R&D and innovation information service

03 Jan 2008

CORDIS, the Community Research and Development Information Service, has launched a new online service covering the research and innovation activities carried out under the Slovenian Presidency of the European Union (1 January to 30 June 2008).
The service sets out the research and development (R&D) and innovation policies of the Slovenian Council Presidency. The country's overarching goal is to oversee the further development of the European Research Area (ERA). Key policy areas to be addressed during Slovenia's six months at the helm of the EU include Joint Technology Initiatives (JTIs), the European Institute of Technology (EIT), research infrastructures, women in science and strengthening research ties with the Western Balkan countries.
A dedicated news section will provide information on the latest developments in European research and innovation policy throughout the Slovenian Presidency of the European Council.
Meanwhile the events section offers a comprehensive overview of the research-related events scheduled to take place in the framework of Slovenia's presidency. These include the meetings of the EU's research ministers and conferences open to a wider audience. In addition to this, visitors to the new service can access the contact information of both the government ministries responsible for research policy and the country's leading research institutes.
A links page directs users to the websites of a wide range of organisations involved in research in Slovenia. These include virtual libraries and research information systems; public research institutes; infrastructure services; universities; the Academy of Sciences; libraries; associations and foundations; centres of excellence; and technology parks.
The CORDIS Slovenian Presidency service was developed by CORDIS in cooperation with the relevant Slovenian authorities and is available in English and Slovenian.
