The principal objectives of this CASACONFERENCE will be to bring immediate attention to the profound disconnect between primary care and substance abuse detection and treatment. This CASACONFERENCE will, in part, build upon the findings of CASA's report, Missed Opportunity: National Survey of Primary Care Physicians and Patients on Substance Abuse . The most troubling finding of the survey is that 94% of primary care physicians (excluding pediatricians) failed to include substance abuse among the five diagnoses they offered when presented with early symptoms of alcohol abuse in an adult patient. CASA's survey revealed some of  other  reasons why physicians are missing or misdiagnosing patients'substance abuse:  lack of adequate medical school training ; skepticism about treatment effectiveness ; patient resistance ; discomfort discussing substance abuse ; time constraints ; fear of losing patients ; and lack of insurance coverage . The conference  will assist primary care practitioners and  those who work with them by bringing together the leading researchers and practitioners in the areas of primary care and substance abuse, in all its facets.

Keynote addresses will be presented by Nora D. Volkow, M.D ., Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) /National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Louis W. Sullivan, M.D ., President Emeritus, Morehouse School of Medicine and former Secretary, U.S. Health and Human Services.
