About NEM
Networked and Electronic Media (NEM) is one of the European industrial initiatives, also known as Technology Platforms, established by major key European and global stakeholders. NEM addresses the convergence of media, communications, consumer electronics, and IT as a wide opportunity for future growth, by taking advantage of generalized broadband access, increased mobility, availability of richer media formats and contents, as well as new home networks and communications platforms. For more information, visit the NEM Initiative website.
About eNEM

eNEM is the Spanish Technology Platform for Networked Audiovisual Technologies. It was created in 2005 as an initiative of the industrial sector and supported by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, the Ministry of Education and Science and CDTI (Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology). The European reference platform, the NEM Technology Platform (Networked & Electronic Media), exerts enormous influence on multimedia and audiovisual matters and will implement most of the budget available for the Seventh Framework Programme (VII PM).

The 2010 NEM Summit, to take place in Barcelona’s Hesperia Tower on October 13-15, 2010, offers tremendous opportunities to get involved in the major conference and exhibition in Europe devoted to networked media and ICT at large.
This conference and exhibition is organized by the NEM Initiative, and the European Technology Platform on Networked and Electronic Media, and is held under the aegis of the European Commission.
It addresses ICT at large and more precisely topics related to networked and electronic media derived from the 7th NEM Strategic Research Agenda updated in September 2009:: Media-related applications and business models ; Content creation ; Networking and delivery infrastructure ; Content search and media presentation ; Technology drivers and enabling technologies.
Topics for the 2010 NEM Summit
These topics will be addressed in 4 focused Workshops :
- New content services,
- User centric content,
- Content delivery and
- Green NEM.
Each workshop will be organized under the supervision of two leaders (one from the industry, one from the academia). .
On-going technological developments in media distribution are enabling an unprecedented number of innovative applications, empowering the role of the end-user and fostering the creation of new business initiatives. Electronic media technologies are enabling new generations of media devices and services, seamlessly conveyed over ever-increasingly intelligent media transportation networks. Thanks to the emergence of flexible content representation and rendering technologies, eApplications at large, supported by secure and trustworthy authentication and payment services, will be available everywhere, any time and on every device.
The retrieval of «My preferred Content» will be made easy by the rapid adoption of multimedia search utilities that will unleash the power of identifying objects by AV multimedia keys. The relevance of the results will be improved even more, thanks to the context-awareness capabilities of terminals. The same system will allow the user to easily share his experiences and creativity with a broad community.
The multi-modality of rich and interactive media content will greatly improve user experience, including people with disabilities, through immersive and more natural use of all human senses: the user becomes an integral part of the multi-media experience, while the terminal device itself vanishes.
Visitors will be able to network and share information and views on R&D status and perspectives, to identify future trends, and to discuss opportunities for research collaboration. The ambition of the NEM Summit is to foster the interaction between researchers and business decision makers active in this emerging market, hence annealing the outcome of R&D activities into the creation of new business opportunities. The Summit will also allow researchers to identify opportunities for international research collaboration under the ICT Theme of EU Research Framework Programme 7 (FP7).

“NEM Art”
Art meets Science at the 2010 NEM Summit: launch of an “Electronic art contest”

Thanks to the support of the two main sponsors of the 2010 NEM Summit, BBC and Technicolor, a “NEM art contest” was launched at the attention of artists from Europe and the rest of the world making innovative use of networked and electronic media technologies (based on texts, pictures, music, videos; referring to the most advanced – and whenever relevant – networked technologies: 3D, virtual reality, web, communications networks, etc.).
A jury composed of NEM Summit sponsors, European Commission representatives and artists will select ArtWork (call is to be closed in Sept to be exhibited at the 2010 NEM Summit.
The artists whose ArtWork will have been selected will be informed on September 17, 2010. They will receive a free pass to the 2010 NEM Summit so that they can discover the latest Networked Electronic Media technologies through the conference and the exhibition, and show their artwork in a dedicated area.
The NEMart selection committee will grant the « 2010 NEMart award » (together with a 5,000 Euro price*) to the artwork that makes the most innovative use of NEM technologies (* the price may be split).
A “sandpit workshop” will also be organized during the NEM Summit. This will provide artists, entrepreneurs and scientists with an opportunity to lively interact with each other. It will be supported by experienced facilitators that work in the interplay of art and technology and will make this moment a fun and fruitful event. We hope it can inspire new collaborations and innovation across disciplines. The outputs of this workshop will be presented during the closing session.
