EURIPACS deals with image archiving and communications. It is addressed to radiologists and final users treating images, mainly cardiologists, pathologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons and endoscopists, all of them interested in an easy and friendly management of a large amount of data. Integration between picture archiving and transmission system, hospital information system and radiological information system was fostered. For health care providers and purchasers cost/effectiveness in this strategic and costly field is a major point which was also addressed. The followings concepts were implemented in the prototypes: adaptation to the needs of different users and their interactions in a flexible, variable and adaptive manner; integration of multiple vendors using recognised standards; inception of emerging technologies and high speed transmission technologies to seek and load images within other hospital information systems linked to points of care.
