Europe contains a wealth of medical knowledge that should be made available easily and widely in order that medical professionals are kept updated and that patients get the most efficient treatment. In most developed countries, the problem is not the generation of knowledge, but the retrieval of the relevant information when and where it is needed. In the USA and Japan, industry is trying to develop user-friendly tools for navigating in the big information networks that are currently under creation. GALEN is testing an innovative "generative" approach specifically designed for medicine in order to provide the necessary flexibility to allow information to be viewed in many different ways and reorganised to fit the needs of different users. It is a kind of umbrella project able to integrate a variety of different applications such as the medical record, data interchange, knowledge based systems and natural language processing. Its results have the potential of a far reaching impact on the telematics industry.
