The ultimate goal is to provide the pathologists with the computer technology they repeatedly ask for with the purpose of: improving reliability of diagnostic and prognostic of cancers (for example, decrease false negative from 20% to 2%), sharing experience among the medical community so that a standard expertise will be available to all concerned (remote consultation), increasing the quality (by built-in consistency controls). The main technical challenge is to design, construct and medically evaluate a dedicated microscope with built-in computer workstations connected on a network. These workstations are expected to definitely change the way pathology is carried out nowadays. Two companies having a world-wide market (Carl ZEISS and ALCATEL) are committed to manufacture and distribute these microscope workstations by the end of the project.
