MENELAS is dealing with informatisation of Patient Discharge Summaries. The rationale is based on the observation of the continuous spreading of Hospital Information Systems. In order to perform efficiently they need that patient data be error-free, complete, updated, and easily accessible. We state that natural language is the most appropriate form of encoding medical information to fulfil these goals, providing a general architecture for patient data acquisition from natural language patient discharge summaries and for the management and retrieval of these data. In addition to this acceptability add-on MENELAS allows more and new facilities such as automatic encoding of patient disease, and various forms of case base reasoning. This approach will drastically change the perception and the usage of HIS by doctors, it will enable them to better use the historical memory of patient cases, thus facilitating patient follow-up and enhancing quality of care.
