The management of health care delivery services in metropolitan areas, under the present cost containment policies, is becoming more and more complex. Decision makers and health providers are confronted with the tasks of providing quality and efficient health services in cities that grow disorderly with scattered facilities. At the same time cities can be seen as privileged places in terms of availability of sophisticated telecommunication services. This study will investigate, from an strategic and operational point of view the situation of health care delivery in large metropolitan areas, the specific needs felt by decision makers, the opportunities to improve the present situation by using advanced telematic systems, and the relevant sector actors interest to participate in such a process. The study will also identify the possible role and contribution of the European Community, specially within the R&D actions.
