In industrialised countries, health care is of very high quality, but its cost are rising much quicker than national product and could become unbearable to the economy. So the problem is to control cost while preserving quality and also equity of access. According to different surveys, 10% to 30% of medical procedures could be either avoided or performed more efficiently if a good information system was available. The PROCAS project developed an innovative universal tool to enable a critical medical and economical assessment of past cases and to guide in the selection of the most effective procedure when confronted with a new patient. In order to have the quickest impact, it developed a pilot in 3 different countries on the two most expensive domains of medicine: cardio-vascular diseases and cancer.
