Health care telematics is experiencing a growing use by more and more categories of staff and in an increasing complexity of systems. The individuals right to move freely within the community and its expectation of receiving an adequate medical treatment anywhere constitutes together with its legitimate demand for privacy and safety an immense challenge to future telematics systems. The increasing sensitivity of medical personal data due to incurable diseases and genetic information, and a growing possibility and pressure to use these data for other purposes than they were collected for, including research and statistics, demands clear technical and regulatory rules to be followed. In SEISMED doctors, engineers, administrators and lawyers work to develop a technique to analyse risks to information in a health environment and to develop practical guidelines on how to implement and maintain a secure information environment. The market for risk-analysis-techniques and practical guidelines is huge. The consortium tested its recommendations in practical life and the outcome gave a useful input to the standardization process in CEN TC251. The project had an important role in the concertation process, encouraging other projects to be aware of security and confidentiality aspects in their work and to do something about it.
