It has been stated that their are no illnesses, but ill persons, each of them with a different presentation. This is one of the main reasons why doctors agree so seldom, and wherever an expert gives an opinion one can always find an other expert to argue the opposite assumption.

Provided that a minimum of consensus is required to deliver an acceptable level of medical care, this project aims to gather, organize and encapsulate the sate of the art knowledge in several aspects of digestive and abdominal disorders. The model should be generalizable to other medical domains as a true template. The method used by the consortium, involving the medical profession in the development of the product, guarantees the acceptance and future use. The deliberate simplicity and low requirements for the software to be developed will ensure its broad distribution and integration within other medical information systems. At the end, the resulting telematic package could be used across Europe, from the office of the family doctor to the emergency room of the teaching hospital. The tuning of the system was assured via evaluation of National boards, existing groups, monitored installations, plus an expansion beyond the EC thanks to the involvement of the World Organization of Gastroenterology.
