Nursing is a significant and fast growing part of health care costs. It is also a domain were information technology has had a low impact. The objective of the action is to coordinate work done in the Member States and to help define future European activities. The main contribution of TELENURSING was on the conceptual level, and in view of its focus on european classifications for nursing practice with regard to patient problems, nursing interventions and patient outcome, including educational measures. Classifications are an important vehicle for information in the health care sector. The group focused on topics related to the development of classifications, definition and coding of clinical terms, standardisation of terminology and the development of nursing minimum data sets in Europe. It is hoped that the awareness created by TELENURSING about the conceptual foundation of nursing and the nursing process will be taken into consideration in the development of telematic applications for health care.
