Overview

Promotion of the use of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) in the Health Sector. Identification, evaluation and integration of the initiatives that have been developed in the frame of data interchange standards for Healthcare in Europe and, complementarily, the dissemination of them, through presentations carried by EDIFORHEALTH in conferences, seminars and workshops. Finally, from the results of the previous activities, guidelines for further developments and strategies for the success of EDI in Healthcare.

Methods Used

To establish a Steering Committee of relevant professionals actively involved in IT strategies, standardisation activities and EDI implementation, that will give the guidelines for the main activities of the project

Two types of activities:

A study about the state of the art of EDI in healthcare, that identifies the real status and degree of implementation of EDI.
Celebration of a Pan European workshop where the results of the study were the base to discuss and develop future strategies related with the implementation of EDI in the health sector. An important group of experts and relevant people in healthcare and standardisation domains were invited, with the support of the European Commission.

Results

The promotion and awareness activity of EDI in healthcare.
The opportunity to bring the importance of EDI to Health Authorities stressing its main benefits.
The opportunity to involve Health Authorities, by stimulating responses to questions about EDI strategy.
The creation of a motivation to learn about the developments of EDI through experiences from other countries.

Exploitation of Results

EDIFORHEALTH represented the first significative activity within Health telematics devoted to stress the importance of implementing EDI, always in a standardised environment, that implies consensuating and harmonising activities. The results of EDIFORHEALTH served as a reference for future projects in the Health sector that tried to implement regional networks, a key issue in the "information society"
