Health Telematics in: Greece

Greece

In 1988, the Greek Ministry of Health began a central informatics programme. By the end of 1993 information systems had been installed in fifteen major hospitals. These systems included medical, nursing and administrative applications. A second phase is being planned which will extend the systems to a further group of hospitals while introducing more advanced applications, such as PACS, to university hospitals.
In the telemedicine field the Ministry of Health has financed a programme which provides diagnostic support by linking doctors located in 13 health centres, to a hospital in Athens.

Other developments in this area include the Encephalos' Diagnostic Centre which links 13 units to a central diagnostic facility, and Cardioexpress', which is a private monitoring service based on an electronic medical record, offering emergency cardiac assistance to subscribers.
Recent developments in Greece include a study of the Greek Public Service Insurance Fund Health Care System. An evaluation of bids is taking place to select a consortium to undertake the following:
draft the technical specification for restructuring the Greek Public Service Insurance Fund Health Care System
support the Ministry in its selection of a systems integrator that will undertake the development of such a system, and

monitor the progress of the system implementation.
It is explicitly stated that the specification must be based on the introduction of smart cards in the operation of the present system. The key tasks are to prepare a requirements analysis, carry out a survey of the international experience in using smart cards in primary care information systems, and the identification and assessment of alternative solutions.
Greece is involved in the following Health Telematics Programme projects funded by DGXIII:
