"The European Commission's Information Society Directorate-General will
be presenting the results of leading edge IT projects and looking
for future innovation partners at the Orbit/Comdex Europe 20001
exhibition, in Basel, Switzerland on 25 to 27 September.
The results of 25 leading edge EC-supported IT research projects, part
of the i3net network of excellence, will be on show at the i3 Research
Village. The display brings together new technologies developed
under the two poles of the i3 research programme - Connected
community and Inhabited information spaces (CI) , which explores
computing for real and virtual communities, and Experimental
school environments (ESE) , which focuses on the school environment
of the future for 4 to 8 year-old children.
The Information Society Directorate-General's Future and emerging technologies
programme will also be looking to attract further private sector
partnerships for research under the next Framework Programme
(FP6) .
The Orbit/Comdex event will also feature talks from those involved in
i3 projects and a discussion of the concepts and issues underpinning
new technology developments. The i3 (Intelligent information interfaces)
initiative was launched by the Commission in 1995 to find ways
of improving interaction with technology for the broad population
of non-specialist users. The scheme is continuing to develop
this concept, in particular through 'intelligent' technology
which enables users to interact with technology, information
and other people in an intuitive, human-centred way."
