European Funding in Perspectio

As a complement to its consensus formation and regulatory activities, the European Commission funds a significant number of collaboration initiatives between users, researchers and industry from the different Member States of the European Union and its Associated Countries. Most of these initiatives are grouped within a rolling 5 years plan called "Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development". The 4th is currently running from 1994 to 1998, the 5th is being prepared. Projects are selected through competitive tendering procedures regularly published in the "Official Journal of the European Communities".

Research and industrial development in the health telematics field is part of this overall

mechanism. HEALTH TELEMATICS, with an approximate budget of 140 Million ECUs (MECUs) over 5 years, is not a "programme" by itself, but a "sector" within the wider 898 MECUs "TELEMATICS APPLICATIONS PROGRAMME" which is managed by Directorate General XIII. The other sectors are: Administration, Transport, Research, Education & training, Libraries, Urban & rural areas, Disabled & elderly people, Environment, Telematics engineering, Language engineering, Information engineering. Eighty projects are currently running under the health sector. A few more will be added at the end of the current call for proposals (the last within the 4th Framework Programme) which will close on 15 April 1997.
