Overview

REMEDES builds its services around the General Practitioner, who over the years has become distanced from some of the care of his patients through the increasing complexity and specialisation of the health systems, and who is more and more often seen as key to cost effective delivery of health care. REMEDES will assist the GP in becoming the gatekeeper to the whole health system, by supplying him with facilitated access to the other health care institutions.

The REMEDES architecture is based on a server system which links the different health care actors (GPs, specialists, secondary care, home care etc.) into a telematic network which will facilitate and speed up the communication between them.

All the services that REMEDES offers are customised and adapted to meet the needs and regulations of the various countries in which they will be implemented.

The initial set of services includes:

Clinical services including:
- Laboratory test request & results reporting
- Diagnostic procedure request & results reporting
- Hospitalisation request
- Referral/outpatient booking
- Discharge summary
- Shared care (clinical balance during therapy)
Information services: medical statistical reports
On-line booking services

REMEDES currently has pilot sites in the United Kingdom (Cambridge and Huntingdon Health Authority – population of 421.000, 4 hospitals and 200 GPs), Spain (Hospital de Móstoles in the area of Madrid – population of 400.000, 1 hospital, 3 primary care centers and 124 GPs) and Italy (Bergamo- population of 380.000, 5 hospitals, 327 GPs).

Purpose and objectives

The objective of REMEDES is to create networks of information exchange and services between General Practitioners, Health Authorities, and healthcare providers that enable more direct delivery of better quality, more cost-efficient healthcare to patients, with the General Practitioner serving as the gatekeeper.

Results

The benefits of the REMEDES project are expected to be twofold:

The project is expected to deliver significant clinical benefits to both GPs and others, both through the main primary services described above, and also through the secondary services. ?????The project aims to prove the commercial viability of the service, based on the concept that the service helps to reduce the total cost to the community of administrating health care to a given set of citizens. Savings released from the service are used to pay for the service itself through mechanisms that the Study on Telemedicine using Euro-ISDN has identified.
