Overview

Patients in Europe expect a steadily improving quality of health care based on new technologies. They also expect steadily improving standards of medical knowledge and expertise as much as an effective dissemination of new diagnostic and therapeutic knowledge. Patient requirements can only be fulfilled by medical doctors having the appropriate instruments available.

The neurosciences and neuro-medicine are good examples of where new technologies, such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), improved diagnosis and therapy. However, it is not sufficient to have the diagnostic machinery produce data. Data need to be analysed, quantified and understood by clinicians in order for them to arrive at an objective diagnosis. The clinicians therefore have to be supported by tools to quantify the findings, e.g. in terms of size and location. They have to be supported by reference data, e.g. atlases and similar cases. Finally they have to be given advice by experts to whom they can talk and discuss cases. What is actually required is a versatile but integrated software aiming directly at the diagnostic process.

Based on the technical and clinical results of previous work done by the consortium (BrainWorks from SAMMIE I) CLINWORKS was conceptualized, implemented and validated, as an integrated departmental system for neuromedicine.

Purpose and objectives

The objective of the project was to provide CLINWORKS, an integrated departmental system for neuromedicine, to support patient data management, teleconsultation and diagnostic tools for diseases of the brain. CLINWORKS was to consist of three modules:

Results

The two main achievements of this project were: (i) the development and implementation of CLINWORKS, a departmental system composed of BrainWorks, TeleWorks and InfoWorks and the submission to the four clinical test sites in three releases, and (ii) the tests, the validation and demonstration of CLINWORKS at the four hospitals (University Hospitals Düsseldorf (RLKH), Thessaloniki (AHEPA), Brussels (ULB) and Birmingham (Queen Elizabeth). Common to all software components is the support of PC hardware under Windows NT 4.0. It therefore opens diagnostic imaging, teleconsultation and multimedia document handling to a wide community of clinical users. This was clearly appreciated by the clinical test sites. Using CLINWORKS has:

increased ease of analysis and processing of diagnostic information of a patient, such as 3D visualisation in BrainWorks.
