Overview

The main goal of ECOLE/GRIP is to develop a telematics infrastructure to support clinical groups collaborating on the development and dissemination of systematic cancer literature reviews and evidence-based guidelines, principally in the field of oncology.

ECOLE/GRIP is developing COLLATE, a WWW-enabled workgroup environment implemented on a Lotus Notes platform, to support dispersed collaborative groups throughout the complete guideline development cycle (from the collection, analysis, systematic review of evidence and consensus forming, through to guideline design, construction, publication and dissemination). COLLATE supports document management, authoring and editing over the Internet, and provides methods for accessing and browsing multimedia databases of systematic literature reviews and guideline documents, and can provide links to external applications, such as on-line bibliographic database packages. The latest release of COLLATE (v2.0) has been implemented as a WWW site (though the option for Notes client access directly to Notes databases on the Lotus Domino server has been retained).

Purpose and objectives

Work in ECOLE/GRIP is based on the belief that the implementation of evidence-based research in clinical practice can improve quality, consistency and cost effectiveness in healthcare. There is widespread evidence that variations exist in the quality of patient care both within and between countries, and that patient outcomes can be much improved if state-of-the-art practice is followed. However, getting research into practice is a protracted and expensive process, typically involving large groups in iterative and extended cycles of literature search and analysis, consultation, discussion, drafting, editing, and consensus building. Delays in the publication and dissemination of best clinical practice are common. New technology telematics applications, supporting workgroup management, offer great potential in streamlining the collaborative activities of groups of literature reviewers and guideline authors, and in making electronic versions of literature reviews and practice guidelines more readily accessible to health professionals.

ECOLE/GRIP is developing tools and services to speed up the process of getting clinical research into practice. The project aims to provide the European oncology community (and other medical sectors) with the means to collaborate on the development and dissemination of systematic cancer literature reviews and evidence-based guidelines. It is expected that the provision of these tools and services to practitioners in the field of clinical oncology, and the demonstration of their capabilities during the evaluation phase of the project, will increase awareness by the medical community of the benefits of the technology, and promote its wider use. The project's innovative information tools and services will be tested by end-users and institutions across Europe. Expected benefits include: improved support for co-operative editing and reviewing and for maintaining and updating databases; less costly, higher quality, more efficiently produced literature reviews and guidelines; improved availability of best-practice research findings to health care professionals over the Internet (WWW) or on CD-ROM.

Results

The principal results planned by project are as follows: Organisational and business model to support collaborative systematic review and guideline development.
Methods to undertake collaborative systematic clinical research literature reviews and to develop and publish clinical guidelines on the WWW.
COLLATE: a WWW-enabled workgroup environment to support dispersed collaborative groups throughout the complete guideline development cycle (from the collection, analysis, systematic review of evidence and consensus forming, through to guideline construction and dissemination).
A set of cancer literature reviews implemented as hypermedia documents (to disseminate best cancer knowledge over telematics networks, including the WWW).
A set of guideline knowledge bases (concentrating on cancer).
