Overview

EHTO collects, analyses and makes available in a user-friendly form information on developments in the field of health telematics. It contributes to the deployment of health telematics applications and standards in Europe.

The objectives are to help:

1) user groups to define their requirements,

2) decision makers in their choice of telematics solutions,

3) industry to deliver more appropriate products. The information held by this European Centre is organised into categories corresponding to the needs of the different sector actors and its dissemination is amplified through a network of “affiliated” observatories in the National languages both inside and outside the European Union.

Purpose and objectives

One purpose of EHTO is dissemination of results of the "Telematics Applications Programme" (TAP) to the health sector. As such, EHTO should become the "entry point" for any person or organisation seeking either a quick updated overview on health telematics activity or a more detailed accurate information on any important issue. The objective is to demonstrate a cost-efficient use of web technologies to disseminate results of EU funded activities and to assist in the deployment of health telematics in Europe by providing information in the most relevant domains of interest to health professionals decision makers and service providers such as R&D results, standards, assessment and legal matters. It will also provide less technical, more general information, on health telematics issues to the European citizens.

A major goal is to bring together on a specifically tailored “electronic market place” (which extends world-wide and in different languages thanks to the concept of "affiliated" sites) the entire range of actors from the health telematics sector, including top policy makers. This Action will benefit programme participants, projects, health telematics users and the health telematics industry and services.

The information display and retrieval system will be permanently adapted to the quick changing pace of the web technology and to the transformations in the health care environment. The ultimate objective is to become independent of EU funding shortly after the end of 1998 as this is felt to be the only proof that an initiative is useful to the user and to the industrial community.

Results

An Information/Knowledge Base to disseminate and promote project results and make available other up-to-date information.

Creation of a network of National language “affiliated” sites adapted to the dissemination of health telematics information relevant to the language and the health structure of each Country or Region. A publicly available Memorandum of Understanding describes the objectives and purposes of this network.

Development of a virtual Demo Site, allowing the user community to evaluate products and services in real time.

Coherent updating policy allowing the site to become a repository of the history of health telematics since 1992
