Overview

The project I4C will be carried out for the further advancement of cardiac care, in principle stretching from preven-tion to follow-up. I4C will concentrate on clinical applications whereas for extensions to primary care, use will be made of the results of other projects within the 4th Framework Programme. The goals of I4C will be reached by: 1. Integrated access to data, wherever they are stored; 2. Support of evidence-based care by remote electronic consultation and peer review; 3. More compre-hen-sive and more consistent recording of patient data, images, videos, and biosignals, combined in a multimedia patient record; 4. The establishment of a Reference Data Set. These goals will be achieved by using in several institutions a cardiological workstation that includes a multi-media patient record (Orca). Industry is being involved to ensure continuation and support of I4C.

Purpose and objectives

A project is executed on Integration and Communication for the Continuity of Cardiac Care (I4C) by very experienced partners with an established track record of European collaboration and industrial successes. Improvement of cardiac care, from prevention and treatment to follow-up to rehabilitation, will be obtained by: 1. Comprehensive and consistent (serial) recording of patient data, images and biosignals; 2. Easy access to diagnostic and therapeutic information for medical, nursing and paramedical staff through the availability of cardiac workstations; 3. Rapid access to patient data, information and knowledge, wherever stored and for whatever purpose, irrespective of where the enquiry originates or the answer lies. An important result will be a structure for a multimedia patient record in cardiology. Thus far, no co-ordinated attempt has been made to delineate the structure of a cardiological multimedia patient record. A common software interface will be implemented for legacy systems which will facilitate the transfer of data from any system or digital device to a cardiological workstation. The workstation will also support patient care in a hospital environment, its assessment and EDI connection to primary care. Generic software and existing tools for an integrated medical workstation will be implemented to enable inter-change of cardio-logical data, biosignals and images within a hospital and from one hospital to another.

Results

The partners of I4C believe that the project would merit commercial involvement in view of the availability of a prototype workstation. For this reason, approaches were made to several European companies to seek their involvement in commercial exploitation of the proposed cardiology workstation, including the multimedia patient record. Some European electromedical companies expressed their interest to participate. It is foreseen that there may be a number of types of workstation to be made commercially available and it is for this reason that a range of companies are very interested in participating. At one extreme, there is a possibility of a cardiac workstation capable of displaying all types of digital image such as could be obtained from echocardiographs, cardiac X-ray systems, a magnetic resonance imaging system, as well as an ECG management facility.

There is at present no competitive product on the market so that successful completion of this project should place European companies in the forefront of this field.
