Overview
The macro-goal of MEDICO is to accelerate information flows between clinical research and clinical practice. This serves the macro objective of the Telematics for Healthcare programme: improved health outcomes.
MEDICO will contribute to this process in two ways:
- Extending the reach of existing and developing educational materials;
- Facilitating easier and more effective access to educational content.
The end product of MEDICO will be a technical platform from which doctors can:
- Access on line information utilizing a search engine to make on line activities more time efficient and educationally effective for doctors;
- Download and interact with CD-ROM based teaching packages;
- Download in Streaming Audio EuroTransMed continuing medical education programmes.
The above are based on existing narrow band technologies. MEDICO recognizes the limitations of its budget and the gap between technology availability and technology adoption. But the MEDICO platform will prepare doctors for broad band networks: to receive EuroTransMed programmes direct to PCs instead of via satellite. There will also be a demonstration of Real Video within MEDICO.
As part of the ACTION cluster MEDICO is focused on oncology but all successful developments will be as applicable to other medical disciplines.
Purpose and objectives
The principal objective of MEDICO is faster information flows between clinical research and clinical practice. This is clearly being achieved by satellite, and through user friendly Internet access to the content of EuroTransMed programmes and University of Leeds teaching programmes.
The objective serves three aims:
? Earlier adoption of best practice
? Earlier rejection of ineffective treatment
? Increased harmonisation of treatment outcomes between centres
The messages are strong but MEDICO will provide the Telematics tools to disseminate the messages by satellite, Web delivered text-based summaries, and RealAudio files.
The University of Leeds and Telescan will demonstrate the ability to put inter-active teaching programmes on line, another Telematics tool to extend reach and add value.
Telescan and EuroTransMed will extend the multi-media potential and capacity of the WEB by replicating servers. If Telematics is easier to use, quality content is provided and responsiveness is improved, more clinicians will use it.
Telematics is improving communication between researchers and opinion-leaders and clinical practice.
