Overview
The NIGHTINGALE Project is essential in planning and implementation of strategy in Training the Nursing Profession in using and applying healthcare information systems. The scope of this project is to provide curriculum development in the multi-disciplinary field of Nursing Informatics by consensus process at all levels of Nursing Education and Training as well as implementation and demonstration of the curriculum at various sites across Europe.
Therefore, NIGHTINGALE is contributing towards the appropriate use of the developed Telematics infrastructure across Europe by educating and training nurses in a harmonising way in the upcoming field of Nursing Informatics.
Under this scope the NIGHTINGALE with cooperation with all European actions and projects in the area of training health care professionals is trying to provide consensus curriculum development in Nursing Informatics. The most essential part and contribution of this development is provided by the Users Group that is comprised of nursing professionals, nursing systems professionals and health policy makers in the area of nursing education represented from all European Union member states. The Users Group is the monitoring and dissemination body of the work performed, where workshops and conferences are the major platform of the consensus process.
NIGHTINGALE is developing courseware material based on the curriculum development process using multimedia technologies. Computer based training software packages in Nursing Informatics are the basis of the training material and the corresponding courses. CD-ROM based training and reference material is also provided in the courses whereas the traditional booklets, teaching material and textbooks can play an adequate role in training.
Purpose and objectives
The main objectives of the NIGHTINGALE project are:
- To survey the existing situation of Nursing Informatics in Europe and register the running courses.
- To investigate the status of the Nursing Curricula related to Informatics courses across Europe and identify the patterns.
- To identify the knowledge in Informatics of the nursing profession in Europe.
- To organise a series of User Workshops to study and identify the User Needs and Comment on the results of the previous items.
- To organise Workshops of Nursing Information Systems providers in order to identify the needs of training in Nursing Informatics.
- To organise Workshops of Nursing Informatics Education and Training computer-based systems providers to identify the needs and prospects of the market of related programs.
- To develop curricula of Nursing Informatics for nurses employed at health care organisations, for students studying nursing in Nursing Schools, Colleges or University based education of Nursing.
- To verify and demonstrate the curriculum development approach of Nursing Informatics at various Institutional sites and Hospitals.
- To integrate the multimedia educational and training approaches in Nursing Informatics.
Results
The expected results of the NIGHTINGALE project are the provision of certain benefits for the citizens, for the users of the application and for the European Industries. In particular these are:
- Expected benefits for the citizens.
The general public and the European citizens would greatly benefit from the training and educational courseware material of the project as a well-trained in modern technology nursing profession will increase the productivity, the applicability of new biomedical equipment, hence the welfare of the citizens.
- Expected benefits for the users of the application.
The nurses who are the users of the Deliverables of the NIGHTINGALE project will benefit enormously by absorbing the new technological developments of telematics and by applying the new schemes, ideas and applications in their every day work at the hospital wards, the hospital management and administration.
- Expected benefits for the European Industries.
The outcomes of the project will give to the industry better-trained users and people from the industries will provide also input to the project.
