CONQUEST | |
| Clinical oncology network for quality in European standards of treatment |
| Project Nr: | HC 1009 | Group: II | Project Duration: 36 months |
| Key words: | |||
| Category: | Boosting the Quality of EU Cancer Treatment | ||
| Summary: | A multi-media quality assurance system for cancer treatment. This oncology network covers quality management, teleconsultation and imaging in centres of excellence. | ||
| Mission: | CONQUEST seeks to cut out big variations in recurrence and survival rates for patients after cancer treatment (within and between EU countries). It will develop a quality management system with telematics and advanced multimedia work stations to provide specialists (of multiple disciplines) with a refined diagnosis and treatment tool to guide them through the latest protocols, while automatically supporting and checking patient treatment data and integrated imaging techniques. Better cancer treatment will result in reduced recurrences and treatment complications, leading to cheaper health care. The application is planned for future adaptation to other forms of medical care. | ||

The project objectives are to eliminate the large variation in recurrence and survival rates for patients after cancer treatment, which are known to exist between and within the EU countries.
The CONQUEST project will through its 2 project lines develop a Quality Management system, using telematics and advanced multimedia work stations, which provides the medical specialist with a high-quality tool for diagnosis and treatment. The tool will guide the treating physician through the latest, approved protocols and will provide automatic support for and checking of patient treatment data and integrated imaging techniques. The expected improvement in the quality of cancer treatment will result in reduced recurrences and treatment complications, leading to savings in health care expenditure and benefiting each individual patient. The application developed will be generic, allowing other medical disciplines in the future to utilise it.

Users involved Specialist clinicians at four major cancer centres in Europe. Technologies and/or approach used Development of a multimedia clinical workstation capable of actively supporting the quality assurance process and providing access to advanced imaging technologies. Expected benefits for the citizen Reduction in the numbers of treatment errors, leading also to considerable reductions in the financial and psychological costs of treatment. Expected benefits for the users of the application Increased data availability, higher data quality and greater efficiency in clinical work routines. More accurate diagnosis and more rapid and effective treatment of patients. Expected benefits for the European Industries The tools developed will help to establish standards for oncology, and radiation oncology, in particular in Europe. This will facilitate industrial development and support for products for use in diagnosis and treatment of cancer on a European-wide scale. Contribution to EU-policies The standards provided by CONQUEST will assist in implementing the objectives of the EU programme Europe Agains Cancer as well as the Union's regional policies. |
