Project Nr: G7-78969 (HC) Group: G7 Project Duration: 18 months
Key words:
Summary: Examination of possibilities for linking health databases and cancer centres in Europe in view of the creation of a Global Cancer Network.
Mission:The purpose of the feasibility study GLOBAL-HORIZON is to prepare Europe for international collaboration in the deployment of telematics-based provision of top quality cancer care expertise to health professionals, first in the G7 countries and later world-wide. The project will study the feasibility of linking centres of expertise in each of several areas, enabling their collective know-how to be shared globally. It will also examine regulatory, technical and other factors involved in linking the centres. The primary outcome will be a set of action plans for implementing a specific project in each area to boost telematically-supported global cooperation in the field of cancer care.

Project Objectives, Summary Description and Anticipated Results

The objective is to prepare the ground within Europe for international collaboration on the deployment of telematics based solutions that will make best available information and expertise in the practice of cancer care to health professionals in the G7 countries, and ultimately throughout the world. The activity will study the feasibility of linking together the leading centres of expertise in each of several areas, so as to enable the knowledge, expertise and data collected at each centre to be pooled, and ultimately made more easily accessible to other centres on a global basis. It will also aim to raise awareness within the European cancer community (and those that fund it) of the potential benefits of such global links.

The study will concentrate on aspects which are of global interest, such as:

  • best medical practices
  • bone marrow donor banks
  • quality control
  • epidemiological data
  • carcinogenic and protective agents
  • clinical trials and their protocols
  • effects and side effects of cancer drugs
  • reference images for pathology and radiology
  • telediagnosis

The study will examine economic, social, regulatory and technical obstacles and opportunities for linking centres and their datasets. The work will be carried out by a core team supported by experts drawn from the various areas of interest. The primary outcome will be a set of action plans for implementing, in each area, a specific project which will demonstrate the benefits and help to overcome the barriers against telematically supported global cooperation in that area. A major workshop will be run at the end of the project as the culmination of an awareness campaign.
