Summary:	The aim is to utilize telematics to enhance continuing medical educationin cancer care. Multimedia Educational Database system in Clinicaloncology to be used by specialists, general practitioners, nurses, and patients. Based on satellite broadcasts, and PC applications.
Mission:	MEDICO is developing applications to break down financial, geographical and language barriers to continuing medical education in Europe. The central aim is the rapid widespread adoption of good practice through telematics-based education and training programmes, initially in the area of cancer treatment. Programme content relevant to clinical practice is seen as essential to the adoption of new technologies. Results will be widely collected and disseminated by means of ATM, ISDN, interactive satellite TV, CD-ROM, disk-based learning packages and established on-line services whose inter-operability will be investigated. MEDICO participates in the project cluster entitled: ACTION for Telematics Applications for Cooperative work of Healthcare Professionals.

Project Objectives, Summary Description and Anticipated Results

MEDICO is validating and developing Telematics applications for the dissemination of new information within the ACTION cluster. Partners will utilise a variety of Telematics applications to break down the financial, geographical and language barriers to continuing medical education. The overriding objective is the early and widespread adoption of "best practice" through Telematics-delivered, evidence-based education and training programmes. This requires accelerated information flows between clinical research and clinical practice.

Horizontal links with other ACTION projects are being maximised but MEDICO is the principal means of disseminating results to wider user groups across the European Union and beyond, using interactive satellite television, CD-ROM, disk-based learning packages and established on-line services. Interoperability between these methodologies is being investigated and new interoperability options tested.

The principal user groups will be hospital-based health care professionals but the materials generated throughout the project will be available to support additional materials targeting patients, media and the public.

Earlier rejection of ineffective and inappropriate treatments across all member states.
Increased harmonisation of treatment outcomes between countries and between centres.

A clear understanding of end-user needs and acceptance/rejection of new Telematics possibilities. Earlier access to relevant research results and agreed protocols in oncology.

Expected benefits for the European Industries
Rapid and effective communication with health care professionals and ethical interaction with research-based pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies.

Contribution to EU-policies
Improved prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and evaluation of effectiveness in clinical oncology. Earlier access to research results and successful protocols impacting on health care policies and budgets. Harmonisation of treatment protocols to level-up best practice across Europe.
