Project Objectives, Summary Description and Anticipated Results
Nephrology Data Systems is one step in the direction of harmonising data exchange in the field of nephrology. It puts together medical professionals, dialysis and transplantation centres and health authorities connecting them to a national and international network.
NDSNET is the consequence of the current situation where - for example - many dialysis and transplantation centres are already equipped with local information systemes (NDS: Nephrology Data Systems) based on heterogeneous hardware and software components that dont allow direct interconnection of different NDS sites. To achieve interoperability between the different systems it is necessary on one hand to harmonize the data exchange between the partners connected to the network and on the other hand to develop an interface that provides the interconnection of different systems. NDSNET provides the European Community with an interface between heterogeneous Nephrology Data Systems and the information highways. The NDSNET-Interface is based on international communication standards and is scalable to the needs of the participating NDSNET partners. It consists of a Server and a Client Component. The NDSNET-Server includes a generic part providing high telecommunication and data base functionality to all partners and an NDS (local) site specific component which provides the necessary data conversions from the local data system to the harmonized data base hosted at the NDSNET-Server. The benefits of NDSNET to the partners and patients are manyfold:
Users involved NDSNET provides a communication facility and services which can be used by different partners: patients, medical professionals like physicians, nurses and health related organisations. Technologies and/or approach used Modern Information Technology based on Communication Standards like TCP/IP is used. The system is implemented in Client/Server Technology on low cost Pcs using UNIX/LINUX and Windows platform. Expected benefits for the citizen Citizens can use the network from everywhere where communication lines and low cost computer equipment is available. The information covers organizational, treatment data and (patient) healthcare records, provided access is allowed. The use of internet is supported as trusted system. Expected benefits for the users of the application The users of the application can integrate the NDSNET Interface in their daily work, providing quality assurance to generated data and data exchange with different partners on a standardized (like EDI, HL7, BDT = Bundesträgerdatenaustausch für Abrechnung, LDT = Labordatenträger, in a CORBA architecture) level. Input to dialysis registers can be provided on a automatic way. Expected benefits for the European Industries European industry can provide standardized client and server components to the NDSNET interface since approved software and communication (industry) standards (operating systems, protocols, etc) are used. Contribution to EU-policies NDSNET fits into the rationales laid down within the framework of the 4th Framework Program. It is an excellent example for a telematics application and is highly user oriented, targetted to different user commuities. |
