October 13, 1997 NEWS RELEASETRIENNIAL WORLD CONGRESS ON HEALTH INFORMATICS comes to the UKThe triennial International Medical Informatics Association MEDINFO Congress will be held in London in Autumn 2001. The UK bid, made by the British Computer Society Health Groups secured the event at the IMIA General Assembly in Sydney in August, in competition with a strong bid from Australia.Innovations being considered include pre-event electronic discussion groups over the Internet on key issues. It is hoped to encourage participation from countries which are still developing their healthcare provision by offering bursaries and support to clinicians, managers and in health, informatics and related disciplines. Several thousand delegates and visitors are expected to attend from around the world. The UK has an unmatched track record in the management of events of the scale of a MEDINFO. A good example is the Healthcare Computing annual event (HC), held in the UK for the last 15 years. The UK will provide a showcase for operational healthcare informatics, academic and scientific developments from the over 50 countries represented in IMIA. Jean Roberts, chair of the MEDINFO Organising Committee, who lead the team said that 'Bringing MEDINFO to London in the early part of the new Millennium provides an excellent opportunity to display sound operational systems and also to evaluate potential benefits of world-wide innovations presented by delegates. MEDINFO has never previously been held on UK soil.' The event, which will attract audiences from all health disciplines and specialties, academic and research bodies, commercial and governmental sources will be held in the London Arena in London's revitalised Docklands. MEDINFO 1998 will be held in Seoul, Korea; following on from previous recent events in Vancouver, Geneva, Beijing / Singapore and Washington.
