OSLO, Norway -- The vendor of a Digital Hospital program in Norway says its "European Centre for Health Technology", which opened June 11, will exhibit state-of-the-art systems for the global healthcare market.

Baldur Johnsen, HP's director, healthcare market development, told Healthcare IT News, "We want this to become a showcase of state-of-the-art leading edge technology in healthcare. We talk about it as a European centre, but it's really going to serve the global market."

The result of a collaboration between HP, Microsoft, Cisco, Imatis and Telenor - a Norwegian telecommunications firm - the digital hospital project first launched roughly four years ago with a 900-bed hospital in St. Olaf, Norway.

"It really became the underpinning initiative that triggered the Digital Hospital program," said Johnsen. "About two years ago, we started, especially in Europe, to bring this message to the market." Johnsen noted that the program started its global reach roughly 18 months ago.  The Centre promises to offer "the latest within health technology" and will be used for research and development purposes and as an exhibition. The facilities include a patient care room, nurse station and adjacent demonstration room. Among the Centre's IT solutions implemented by the partner vendors are systems for network and infrastructure, advanced electronic warning systems and separate patient terminals containing entertainment and communication.

"We are proud of this HP centre being opened in Norway, which is a clear result of Norway being world leaders in developing digital hospitals," said Roger Morberg, director of the Health Centre of Excellence. "This is now enabling us to display and export our knowledge to other European countries. Our goal for the centre is to be a window to the hospitals of the future," he added.

Johnsen said the Digital Hospital project is currently in development in several other areas, including the United Kingdom's Leicester University Hospital and Germany's Asklepios Future Hospital. HP will be announcing future Digital Hospital implementations in coming months, he said.
