A U.S. Air Force imaging expert transmitted live ultrasound images from an aircraft in flight to a medical team on the ground, in a test performed in September on a crew member. They used a new microminiaturized ultrasound system in a probe, introduced by Terason Division of Teratech Corporation. Michael Freckleton MD, Director of Medical Imaging/Information Projects Office at the Dept. of Engineering at Texas A&M University, performed the test on the crew member, who as a side benefit, was diagnosed with gallstones he was unaware of. Ground personnel rated the image quality excellent, with no degradation despite a noisy and turbulent plane ride. The Terason SmartProbe was connected to a notebook PC, with plug-and-play PC options which can store thousands of digital images online and export images via DICOM-compatible technologies, making it network- and telemedicine-ready. Teratech Corp. has worked with the US Dept of Defense helping develop sonar systems and portable imaging systems for the Army’s Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center. The U.S. Department of Defense Military Health Services will be changing the way they do healthcare, as described in a Health Data Management online article, Military Launches Big Internet Initiative. A multi-year $20M contract has been awarded to Integic Corporation (Chantilly, VA) to develop an Internet portal which will enable patients, physicians and military hospitals to build Web sites hosted on the portal. Patients will be able to use the portal to create a personal/family medical history and populate it with their official medical records, access medical information content and send electronic mail to their physician to request appointments, drug refills and other information.
